Remember Patrick Bet-David? He’s a serial entrepreneur who previously talked about how to grow your business by replacing yourself.
Today, he shares more wisdom on running an organisation. This time it’s about the top qualities you should look for if you want to hire and work with the best people.
Quality #1: Love
Pat says he looks for someone who loves his company and its vision. With such love, the person’s heart connects with your organisation.
If you can hire people based on this kind of love, you don’t need to insist on work ethic because love is an action, and work ethic comes with it.
Consider this: Parents provide food for their kids not because they have to, but because they love their children. They also devote time to drop their kids off to school, work hard, and do everything else for love.
Pat notes that you can’t force someone to love you, your vision, or your company. So don’t hire people and force them to love. If there’s no love, no problem; you’ll both find someone you deserve.
Quality #2: Trust
Admittedly, trust doesn’t happen overnight. When Pat hires someone and he’s not directly going to be working with them, he says he spends some time working with the person to develop trust.
This process may take time (e.g. 3 to 6 months). During this period, monitor the person’s work, set expectations, and hold them accountable – until you’re gradually letting go and the trust level reaches an all-time high.
Likewise, that person working with you will get acquainted with your habits, see how consistent you are, and realise that you’re true to your vision. Their trust in you will also develop in the process.
The end result? With a high level of trust, the environment will be much easier to do business in.
Quality #3: Speed
Speed is important because you’ll hear people say: “Would you rather have somebody that works very fast but they’re not very efficient? Or have somebody that’s very efficient but very slow?”
Pat’s answer? He wants both – speed and efficiency. If he’s working with someone who has speed, especially in a startup environment. Why? Because startups typically have faster deadlines than a company that’s been around for 50 years.
These older companies don’t make decisions quickly either. It may take them 6 months to decide on something, while a startup might take only a week.
Quality #4: Personal development
Pat says he loves working with people committed to improving themselves. If he’s working with someone who needs to get better at certain areas but asks time to develop, he’d be happy to give it. This shows that the person is committed to growing and doing better.
As an application of this standard, Pat shares that he runs a book club with his staff. Every month, he recommends a book which his employees read. Like any book club, they gather and discuss what they learned from each book.
Pat notes the gradual growth of his staff since the book club started. Some were frightened of certain things to work on; others dealt with interpersonal conflicts. But now, they’ve improved to a different level because they’ve pushed for personal development.
