“So, Isn’t This Great? They’re Good at AI?”
It is easy to play devil’s advocate here. If a candidate is resourceful enough to set up an AI copilot and use it smoothly during a live interview, doesn’t that prove they are tech-savvy?
But knowing how to read an AI-generated script off a monitor is not the same as having the baseline knowledge required to do the job. When AI takes the wheel in an interview, it hides critical skill gaps.

Ultimately, chasing visual tells might just screen out honest, capable people who simply get nervous, while rewarding polished cheaters who have practised reading off a screen naturally.
Interview Red Flags That Can Point to Live AI Use
Instead of trying to analyse eye movements, focus on the conversation. While none of these confirms anything by itself, what matters is whether several show up together. And even then, treat it as a reason to dig deeper, not a verdict.
- Answering hard questions too fast, or easy questions too slow: A nervous candidate hesitates before a complex scenario but can answer “What’s your internet and home office setup like?” instantly. Someone waiting on a prompter can do the reverse with a smooth, immediate answer to a hard strategic question, then dead air before something simple. Look at the pattern across the whole conversation, not any single pause.
- Answers that are too complete: Real human experience can be messy. Authentic responses contain caveats, tangents, and moments where a thought trails off. Live AI output tends to deliver balanced, neatly formatted responses complete with an introduction, three points, and a concluding summary.
- Total lack of specifics: AI models generate excellent general concepts, but they struggle with unscripted personal details. Watch for answers that lack real-world anchors, such as zero mentions of exact figures, or of the awkward moments that happen during real projects.
- A severe tone gap: Pay attention to how the candidate speaks during small talk. If they are casual, loose, and natural during greetings, but instantly transform into a formal corporate presenter the second you ask a technical question, you are witnessing a tone gap.

The most effective strategy is to structure the conversation so live AI assistance has nothing to work with.
1. Ask About Past Work, Not Concepts
Instead of “How do you handle a difficult client?”, ask “Tell me about the last client who was genuinely angry with you. What was the exact issue, what did you say on the phone, and how did it end?”
An AI can instantly output a customer service methodology. It cannot synthesise a detailed, multi-turn personal memory on the fly.

If a candidate says they migrated a company to a new project management system, follow up immediately: “Why did you pick that tool over the alternatives? Who on your team pushed back against the change, and how did you convince them?”
3. Change a Constraint Mid-Answer
While a candidate is explaining their solution to a problem, introduce a sudden variable:
“That sounds solid. But now assume your main developer goes on leave that exact week and your budget is cut in half. What do you cut first?”
A practitioner with real experience will pause, adjust their mental model, and reason through the trade-offs. Someone reading a generated script will freeze because their text output is suddenly irrelevant.
4. Ask for a Decision They Got Wrong
AI models default to positive, successful, and tidy outcomes. Ask the candidate to walk you through a professional failure: a bad call, a missed deadline, or a strategy that bombed. Ask what it cost the company and what personal mistake they made. Genuine reflection is exceptionally hard to prompt live.
5. Conduct Live Working Sessions
If the role involves technical execution, design, writing, or analysis, have them share their screen. Give them quick and easy tasks that mirror daily operations, and ask them to think out loud as they work through it. You are evaluating their thought process, navigation habits, and comfort with their core tools.
