What makes an excellent recruitment specialist? How does one attract and persuade applicants to want the job and stay with the company for a long time? What are the skills needed to ensure a successful recruitment process? Let’s take a look at the list below!
Be a good listener
Being a good listener is one of the most important skills you can have as a recruiter. It’s what helps recruiters understand what candidates want and need, so they can match them with the right job. When it’s a candidate’s market, it’s important to let them feel that you understand how the job or role is perfect for them so they have a reason to stay. Offering a position that isn’t what the candidate has in mind can only serve to waste both of your time.
Learn to recognize top talent
A recruiter is someone who has the skills to identify top talent, interview and assess personality. Recruitment specialists have a number of tools at their disposal when it comes to this process:
- The ability to recognize potential employees for what they are worth – whether it be in terms of their education level or work experience.
- The ability to interview candidates and determine if there’s a good fit between them and your company culture. This is done by asking questions like “What do you like most about working here?” or “What are your strengths?”
- The ability to assess personality traits such as creativity and leadership qualities during an interview process
Be a good communicator
An important part of being a good recruitment specialist is to be clear and concise. Let them know in no uncertain terms what the role entails and what is expected of them in the position, whether that’s day-to-day tasks or if there are opportunities for growth. Just like being a good listener, communicating well shows the candidate that you have their best interests in mind which in turn attracts them into applying for the job.
Provide information in a timely fashion
As a recruiter, it’s your job to provide information in a timely fashion.
- To candidates: Provide all necessary details about the position and company, including how much money they’ll make, what’s required of them (such as education or certifications), and where they can find more information about the organization.
- To hiring managers: Be sure to inform them of any changes in their positions or responsibilities that may impact their performance during the interview process.
- To applicants: Give all applicants an opportunity to ask questions about themselves and/or their qualifications for this position before making any decisions about whether or not you want them on board as part of your team.
Network strategically and use your network effectively
Your network is an invaluable resource. Use it to find job opportunities, candidates, and new clients. Use it to find new jobs. Networking is all about building relationships with people who can give you leads on potential employers—and vice versa! Even if you don’t have any specific skills or experience that a particular company needs right now, there’s always someone out there who might be able to help in the future.
Use multiple channels to reach potential candidates
- Social media. It’s a proven fact that people are more likely to respond to your message if it comes from someone they know, like a friend or family member. For example, if you have an Instagram account and post about the job opportunity on Facebook, chances are that more people will see the post in their newsfeed than on Instagram itself.
- Use your network. You may not know how many people you can reach through word of mouth within your industry but there’s no reason why you can’t use this as an opportunity – especially if you’re targeting specific roles (e.g., salespeople).
- Job boards: If all else fails, try using one of the many online job boards available today such as Indeed or SimplyHired!
Continuously build your own knowledge base
The best way to stay on top of the latest trends in recruitment is to continue learning. It’s important to keep up with the latest industry journals and blogs, attend industry events, and network with other recruiters so that you can learn what works best for your business—and then implement those strategies into your own practice.
