Unrestricted access to quality education, rapid technological development, and increasing global demand for cheaper labour contributed to the Philippines’ success in the BPO market. Once a main agricultural exporter in the Asia-Pacific region, now a top outsourcing destination, the Philippines made a relatively fast turn from exporting rice to exporting skilled labour.
The BPO industry emerged in the Philippines almost a decade ago and since then it had an incredible growth rate. Only last year it generated over $16 billion in revenue. There are over 1 million Philippine employees working for overseas companies.
So, what makes this country a preferred destination for outsourcing? Cheap labour can be found in other parts of the World as well, but other countries can’t also provide high-quality skilled workers who are highly proficient in spoken and written business English.
Cultural differences are minimised by the country’s past ties with the US, Spain, and England. Filipino call centres are preferred by Western countries because Philippine workers speak English with an accent that is easily understandable to Americans and Canadians, Brits, and Australians. Some Philippine remote employee can even speak English with an American accent.
